The Columbus Park of Roses was established in 1959. The rose garden was designed by landscape architect, Charles Waldheim a native of Columbus. his inspiration to design the park came from his travels in Europe and Asia. The park is currently owned by the Chicago Park District, but it was originally established as a state-run facility that would only be open for three months during its peak blooming period.
